ABC’s Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary-style sitcom created by Quinta Brunson. It follows the personal and professional lives of teachers at the underfunded Abbott Elementary, a fictional predominantly Black school in Philadelphia. The series stars Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson. The series first premiered in 2021 and has earned widespread critical recognition. So far, the show has earned 15 Emmy Award nominations and four wins, including best actress in a comedy series for Brunson.
Janine and Gregory have had undeniable chemistry ever since the show debuted. The two teachers shared a kiss toward the end of Season 2, but Janine ultimately decided that they were better off as friends. Season 3 opened with Janine confessing that she does, in fact, want to be with Gregory, but the latter rejected her and the pair have remained in the friendzone ever since. Janine also accepted a fellowship with the school district and hasn’t been working as a teacher for the majority of Season 3. In the most recent episode, she was faced with a major decision that would effect both her career and her relationship with Gregory. Do Janine and Gregory get together on Abbott Elementary? Although we don’t know for sure, Janine’s decision at the end of Episode 10 has certainly made it more feasible. The episode prior, Janine was offered a full-time job with the school district following the conclusion of her fellowship. Although the relentlessly optimistic second-grade teacher would be able to implement real change through the new role, the job would take her away from Abbott and, more importantly, Gregory.
In the opening of Episode 10, viewers learned that Janine had accepted the job, thus crushing everyone’s dreams of her and Gregory finally getting together. Later on in the episode, however, she began to have second thoughts. After receivinga goodbye card from Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) that included signatures from her class, she decided to forgo the job and return to Abbott for good. This decision has reignited fans’ hope, as has the synopsis for next week’s episode, which is titled “Double Date.” The official description reads: “Two teachers head out on a double date, but when they run into familiar bar patrons, it proves to be an unfortunate distraction.” Could Janine and Gregory be the teachers in question? Only time will tell.
Several cast members have weighed in on the potential of the two characters getting together. Tyler James Williams, for his part, doesn’t “necessarily want to see them together.” While appearing onThe Jennifer Hudson Show, the Everybody Hates Chris alum explained: “It’s partially an actor’s choice but also, I read a lot of scripts all the time, I watch a lot of TV, a lot of films, [and] I don’t think that we see displays of platonic love between two people often.” He continued, “I think it’s really easy to go right to ‘they have feelings for each other therefore they should be together,’ right? [But] I like this dynamic of them exploring withholding that and just actively loving each other where they are. That, I like to see.”
“I think seeing a healthy friendship that is deeply caring about one another in a work atmosphere needs to be shown more than the relationship,” Williams concluded.
Chris Perfetti, on the other hand, is with the fans who ship Janine and Gregory. The actor, who stars as Jacob Hill, told Entertainment Weekly: “These characters are just so important to [Jacob] … He believes fully in what Janine is doing and the decision that she makes to step back. It feels really honest. He takes it a day at a time. He’s really hoping that these people who are so important to him will end up together. But I don’t think he would ever mettle.”
Sheryl Lee Ralph, who stars as tenured teacher Barbara Howard, agreed, noting: “I believe in those two. They’re young, they’re immature, but I still say if they would get into some relationship therapy, they might be a wonderful couple.”
